Maths at Downside

Maths at Downside

Here at Downside, our aim in Mathematics is to provide engaging and enriching opportunities that allow our children to become confident mathematicians. Alongside our policies and the National Curriculum objectives, we follow the White Rose Maths schemes of work to provide children with the opportunity to develop their fluency, problem solving and reasoning in all lessons.

Times tables are an essential tool in supporting children in their development of mathematics. Here is a list of the times tables that the children should learn each year alongside their division facts:
Year R – Count in 2s and 10s.
Year 1 – Count in multiples of 2, 5 and 10. Recall and use doubles of all numbers to 10 and corresponding halves.
Year 2 – Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers.
Year 3 – Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables.
Year 4 – Recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12.
Years 5 & 6 – Revision of all times tables and division facts up to 12 x 12.

Each year, we take part in the West Area Partnership times table challenge. Over the last 2 years, our LKS2 team and UKS2 teams have won the challenge!
